Toys 4 Tots at Moore

On Thursday, December 15th, Moore Elementary School participated in our annual Toys 4 Tots toy drive.  Mr. Heffelfinger, one of our 2nd Grade teachers, helped organize the drop-off at the school and was able to have two United States Marines present for the students to interact with as they dropped their toys upon arrive to school.  Ms. Young, our Orchestra teacher, had a couple students playing Holiday music to help spread some Holiday spirit as well.

"This year's drive was off the hook - the largest that I can remember", said Mr. Heffelfinger.  Mr. Heffelfinger then added, "We completely packed the vehicle they brought, there was no room...it was crammed in there pretty good".

Mr. Heffelfinger and the rest of Moore would like to thank everyone who participated and helped make the holidays a little brighter for those who are in need!  We would also like to thank Ms. Young and her students for the lovely music, Mr. Heffelfinger for organizing and helping with the drive, the USMC for their participation, and to the Moore community.

Thank you, and Happy Holidays!

Exciting News!

Mrs. Arcury, our District Dental Hygienist, is one of the 12 winners chosen from hundreds of entries in NCC's (Northampton Community College) Billboard Campaign.  Mrs. McGlynn, NASD's traveling nurse nominated her by writing a letter as to why she should be chosen, along with a photo in my profession.  Mrs. Arcury's photo and the program which she graduated from at NCC (Dental Hygiene) will be prominently displayed for all to see sometime in 2012.  Mrs. Arcury is so excited, and so are we!  Mrs. Arcury's "photo shoot"  is coming up sometime next week!  Congratulations...and we're proud to say we have a star among us!

KidWriting At Its Best!

EMERGENCY CLOSINGS INFORMATION

With that time of year approaching, we wanted to send along some useful information with regards to emergency school closings due to inclement weather.

If there is an emergency or weather closing, an announcement will be made on local radio and television stations by 5:45am, or as early thereafter as possible.  As an alternative, parents/guardians can call the administration office at 610-262-7811 as early as 6:00am on inclement weather days.  One call to the administration office will notify parents/guardians of delays or closures for the entire district.

In the event of early dismissals due to weather or other emergencies, announcements will be made on local radio and television stations, as well as the parent notification system used by the District.  Dismissals vary between the schools (different times for high school/middle school vs. elementary schools), so be sure to listen for your child's school(s).

Please be sure to review with your children the procedures you'd like them to follow in the event of an early dismissal, delay or cancellation of school (alternate place for them to report if no one will be home).

The local radio stations carrying school closings and delays/early dismissals are: 790AM, 1230AM, 1400AM, 95.1FM, 96.1FM, 99.9FM, 100.7FM, and 104.1FM.  Local television stations carrying this information are: Channel 69 (WFMZ) and Channel 16 (WNEP). The school district website (www.nasdschools.org) and local news agency websites will also carry school closings, delays and early dismissal information.

We hope that Mother Nature helps us out this year and limits the number of cancelled days, delays and early dismissals...but if she doesn't, we'll be prepared!

Holiday Drives - Helping those Who Need

Moore Elementary School will be running a food drive during the month of November.  Beginning November 8th and running through November 21st, we will be collecting non-perishable food to distribute to local families in need.  This will be done through cooperation with local food banks.  Students and their families can drop-off their items at the school in our front lobby area, or give them to their teacher.

Beginning December 1st and running through December 15th, Moore will be participating in our annual Toys for Tots program.  We are collecting new, unwrapped gifts for local children identified through the Salvation Army.  The Toys for Tots program is sponsored by the United States Marine Corps, and we will be working with the USMC Reserve Unit located in the Lehigh Valley.  A donation box will be located in the Moore lobby beginning December 1st, and students/families are invited to drop-off their donations at any time.  A full-dress USMC Reserve will be at Moore on December 15th to collect all of the donations, and will also take donations directly from the students beginning at 8:45am.  What a great opportunity for our students!  this is the 27th year that Moore will be participating in the Toys for Tots program!

We thank you in advance for helping local families in need, and supporting the efforts of Moore Elementary School!

A BIG Thank You from PTA!

The 6th Graders would like to thank our local sponsors for making our CAR WASH and HALLOWEEN DANCE possible, and successful.

We received donations from:
Hidden Pine Tree Farms
Moore Tire Center
Mike's Seal Coating
Scott's Auto Body
The Shuman's
Giant and PathMark
Mrs Valimont
As well as all the help from our students and parents.

It is wonderful what can happen when we all pull together.

Help Out Our Schools

We have quite a few announcements to make!

First, a reminder that this weekend has two (2) programs for the Grade 6 Events committee.  One is the "Trunk or Treat" being held Friday night in the parking lot of the school, and the second is the "Halloween Dance" being held on Saturday night in the APR.  Both events require prior registration, so we hope that you were able to purchase your tickets!

Second, Moore Elementary has signed-up for the A+ School Rewards program through Giant Food Stores.  A letter will be coming home this week providing instructions on how you can link your Bonus Card from Giant to Moore in order to raise money for the school!

Third, the end of the first Marking Period will be Friday, November 4th.  Report Cards will be sent home on Monday, November 14th and conferences are scheduled for November 15th through the 18th.

Fourth, there are early dismissals (noon) on the following days:
     Friday, October 28th
     Tuesday, November 15th
     Wednesday, November 16th
     Thursday, November 17th
...and no school for students on:
     Friday, November 18th
     Thursday, November 24th
     Friday, November 25th
     Monday, November 28th

Lastly,  Ms. Lisa Jones, a Kindergarten teacher at Lehigh Elementary School hasI entered a "Del Monte Teacher Monday" contest in order to win $1000 for her classroom, and possibly other prizes for their school.  She is in need of votes!!  The contest runs from Monday to Monday - ending on November 7th.  The website to check out is Fruits.com.  You must set up an account to vote - which is very easy.  Look for her essay and vote every day.  We try to help all of the schools in our District in some way, so why not take a moment and vote for Ms. Jones!

Moore would like to thank all of the volunteers that have been helping in the cafeteria, and through PTA with the Pumpkin Painting and Parent Visitation.  We certainly could not do many of the events and programs we offer if it were not for you!  Thanks, you are greatly appreciated!

Our First "Lion King"!

As part of our School-Wide Positive Behavior Support, students are able to cash-in 150 paw tickets and become the "Lion King" for a day during lunch.  Students are served their lunch by Mr. Dimmick while seated at the throne located on the stage, where they are able to "rule" over their loyal subjects.  As seen in this photo below, Jeffrey (grade 6) was our first Lion King of the school year...and he certainly enjoyed himself!

PANCAKE BREAKFAST!

Join Moore Elementary's 6th Grade students and parents this Saturday morning, October 22nd for an ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT pancake breakfast at Applebee's!  The breakfast will go from 8am-10am at the Applebee's in Wilson (off of rt. 248), next to Wal-Mart.  Tickets will be available at the door, so bring the whole family for a delicious pancake breakfast!  The event is sponsored by our 6th Grade Events Committee (PTA), and is a fundraiser for this year's trip and events.

Pumpkin Painting with Pop

Monday night, the APR was invaded by over 300 students and "pops" for our annual painting program. The annual event, sponsored over the past several years by the PTA, had students decorate their pumpkins along with their pops (dads, grandfathers, uncles, brothers and such) with art materials nd one prop.

The pumpkins were placed into one of four categories - scariest, sports, glamorous and funniest. Winners werevchosen in each category...in each of the two sessions...and for each group (K-3 and 4-6). We hope everyone had fun, and look forward to seeing you at future paintings!

Art for Cancer

On Friday, October 7th, Moore hosted an art auction at the school to
raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We are proud to
announce that the auction raised over $1,200 with almost an additional
$150 in donations, brining our total effort to almost $1,400! The
night was truly amazing, and everyone in attendance enjoyed the event
and raved at the art-work, which was created by our students and their
families. In total, we had 36 pieces auctioned, with prices ranging
from $15 to $130!

We thank everyone who was involved, and we hope to bring the art show
to Moore in the future!

6th Grade Events Committee Meeting

A reminder from the PTA's "6th grade Events"commitee...

There is meeting on Wednesday, October 5th at 6:00pm in the library.

Pie in His Eyes (and mouth, nose, ears)

On Friday, September 30th, all students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 at Moore were given the oppotunity to throw a pie in the face of their Principal, Mr. Dimmick!  This was a reward for those students being able to help Moore achieve AYP status on last year's PSSA's in Math and Reading.  As a school, Moore reached AYP for the 4th consecutive year, and the 8th out of the last 9 years.

Mr. Dimmick challenged the students last Spring to "do the best they can" on the PSSA's, and if they achieved the AYP status for the school...they could "throw a pie in (his) face".  According to some, he even said he'd wear a dress for the event (although he doesn't recall saying that)!  He also stated that if they reached 100% proficiency on either Math or Reading, he'd shave his beard...and if they hit 100% on both, he'd shave his head.  Fortunately for him (and us), that did not happen - many don't think he'd look the same to us without his beard and hair!

The students seemed to enjoy the event, as did the many volunteers and teachers.  The teachers liked it so much, they decided to get into the fray by using what remained in the cans to coat Mr. Dimmick in whipped cream.  We're still trying to determine whether or not it was some form of payback for something he made the teachers do...but we all guess that if you have a chance to spray whipped cream on your boss, why not go for it!

All in all, it was a lot of fun for everyone...and even Mr. Dimmick said he'd "do it again" in order to help motivate the students to do their best and achieve AYP status for another year!

Congratulations to all, and great shot with your pies!

Thank you all very much for the great effort you made towardSaturday's very successful Car Wash & Bake Sale!  We made over $700 not counting the Pancake Breakfast tickets we also sold. Important Message from LifeTouch (school photos)

The following is a message from Lifetouch - our school photo provider.

"The start of the 2011-2012 school year has been marked by natural disaster.  Many of our neighbors now face the daunting task of cleanup and rebuilding.  Recognizing that many families have lot photographic memories in these storms, Lifetouch is proud to share that they will replace any school portrait taken in the Fall of 2010 or Spring of 2011 for those who lost their portraits as a result of flood damage.  Please contact the main office if you would like to request replacement portraits."

If you need to take advantage of this sincere offer, please contact the Moore Elementary School Main Office at 610-837-1859.

Arts Festival - REMINDER

The Arts Festival (Painting Like Pollack and Folk Dancing) will be taking place this Friday night (Sept. 30th).  The activity was post-poned from last week due to rain.

We hope to see you there!

Trunk or Treat

On Friday, October 28th, the Moore PTA will be holding a "Trunk or Treat" in the school parking lot.  The event will be a fundraiser for the 6th Grade Events committee, and provides a safe Trick-of-Treat experience the whole family can enjoy.  The event will run from 6:00-9:00pm, and all Moore students/families are invited to participate.  The more participants, the more treats you will receive!

Arts Festival is Postponed

The Arts Festival at Moore, scheduled for this Friday evening, has been postponed.  This is due to the forecasted inclement weather...and forces us to reschedule the event for Friday, September 30th.  Once again, the festival will run from 5:00-7:00pm on the 30th.

We apologize for any inconveniences that this may cause, and hope to see you all there on the 30th.

Also, a reminder that the auction for the paintings created during this event will be auctioned on Friday, October 7th in the Moore APR.  The auction will begin at 6:30pm, and refreshments will be served.  An auctioneer will present the evening, and all proceeds from the event will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
